Baldur’s Gate 3 Guide – How to Find the Old Book and Avoid the Battle with Bernard in the Ruined Tower

Baldur's Gate 3 Guide - How to Find the Old Book and Avoid the Battle with Bernard in the Ruined Tower

Perhaps the developers themselves did not initially lay down this meaning, but the search for the “Old Book” unexpectedly became for many players one of the most difficult mysteries of the already mysterious tower that you can find while exploring the Underdark. Why this manuscript is important and why it is definitely worth reading in order to avoid an unnecessary and rather complicated fight, we will tell you in this article.

In this quest (or rather, you may not even realize that you are doing a task) you must find and read three passages from the play in order to convince the mechanical guard of the Magic Tower, named Bernard, that you are not a threat.

It so happens that “Descent into Darkness” and “Torn Paper” are found by most players without difficulty, simply by examining the tables and bookshelves on each floor, but for some reason the last manuscript quite often goes unnoticed, which is why there is no way to bring up the dialogue with Bernard to a peaceful outcome causes many sincere indignation. Therefore, we decided to separately clarify the location of the “Old Book” and explain why it is needed at all.

We do not recommend reading The Dusty Book, as you will have a dialogue option that will lead to a battle if you accidentally click through it.

HOW TO FIND THE “OLD BOOK” IN THE RUINED TOWER

Before getting down to the main thing, we recommend that you read our guide on how to get into the Magic Tower and activate the elevator.

The Old Book can be found on a shelf on the second floor of the tower (not counting the basement) – it will be on a shelf next to the western exit to the balcony.

If you can’t find the book’s location , be sure to use the highlight feature by pressing the ALT key on your keyboard . This feature really helps you distinguish between different small objects around you and prevents you from missing something important.

After reading the remaining notes (“Torn Paper” lies on the table next to the elevator on the fourth floor (it’s also the next one after the main entrance), and “Descent into Darkness” is on the large stone table in the corner of the room), you can go to the roof, where you will be greeted by The formidable but surprisingly sociable mechanical guardian of this place is Bernard.

CONVERSATION WITH BERNARD

To ensure everything goes smoothly, you should only answer with phrases from the three manuscripts you read. Here’s how to interact with Bernard if you want to avoid battle:

  1. “Or a friend? Have you come to dispel the stuffy twilight?” – will serve as a code word for Bernard that his mistress has come, and not an enemy, and he will not attack you. All other options will lead to immediate combat.
  2. “Where do you get faith? How will I find out the truth? / How will I show myself out of the darkness?” – the robot will take you for its mistress and obediently carry out the order, placing the “Guiding Light” ring on the table. This ring allows you to find a hidden button on the floor of the elevator, which leads to another, hidden from prying eyes basement, where you can find several valuable things, like a ring of lightning resistance.
  3. “The silence drags on – I’m all alone. / Please, can I hold your hands for a moment?” – Selecting this option prompts Bernard to hug you.
  4. “I only have blank slates left from you. The last gift, a thoughtless gift – but mine” – this dialogue option is available if you picked up the “Mended Parchment” on the table next to Bernard. The Guardian will give you a Greater Healing Potion .
