Decide the fate of a whistleblower in Cyberpunk 2077 Shot by Both Sides quest.
“Shot by Both Sides” is a recently introduced side job featured in the Phantom Liberty DLC of Cyberpunk 2077. You can access this quest after successfully completing “The Damned.” At this juncture, you will have received a message from the fixer, Mr. Hands.
Upon responding to the message and agreeing to take on the job, Mr. Hands will furnish you with additional mission details. The primary objective involves investigating an individual named Bree Whitney, who serves as a journalist. You will receive directions to her apartment as well as information about an unconventional location for retrieving her access card, a crucial item needed for your mission.
Go to Bree’s apartment in Night City
After you’ve followed the quest marker for “Shot by Both Sides” in Cyberpunk 2077, which guides you to Skyline West, enter Bree’s apartment. You’ll notice Johnny making some casual remarks about the opulent ambiance of the place. Nevertheless, in line with the information provided by Mr. Hands, choose the door on the left.
Upon entering, direct your attention to the right corner of the room, just past the computer terminal situated beside you. There, you’ll spot the bamboo plant that Mr. Hands mentioned. Approach the plant and interact with it. Once you’ve done that, a prompt will appear for you to open the cabinet.
Go ahead and open the cabinet, and as you look inside, you’ll find the cabinet drawer open, revealing a Militech Access Card that you can retrieve. Johnny will comment on how the logo on the card is over 60 years old, suggesting that the journalist you’re investigating is involved in some rather dubious activities.
In any event, once you’ve completed your task, compose a message to Mr. Hands to inform him of your progress. He will then direct you to meet a client in Dogtown after nightfall. As you prepare to leave, you may encounter Bree’s neighbor at the door, who might inquire about your presence.
You can defuse the situation by explaining that you’re a friend of Bree’s, and he’s likely to accept your explanation, noting that there have been reports of suspicious individuals lurking around the area recently.
Meet with Bree in Dogtown
In any case, return to Dogtown and ride the elevator down to the lower levels. Proceed past the elevator and continue ahead, where Johnny is stationed. Dash forward until you reach an open area where the quest marker no longer guides you automatically. Here, scan the ground to discover sets of footprints that will lead you in the right direction.
Upon entering this new area, veer to the left and continue forward until you spot a door on your left. Enter through this door, then make a right and proceed through the next door. Beyond this point, avoid the door directly in front of you and follow the path to the side.
As you advance, you’ll come across an open metal door leading to a narrow pathway flanked by a cluster of pipes. Crouch and traverse this path along the pipes until you reach an opening to the right near the end.
From here, go straight, and when you encounter a small cart holding a sizable stack of wooden bars, turn right after passing it. Continue down the long path ahead, and near the end on the left, you’ll spot an opening between two sets of cement pipes.
Enter through this opening, and take a right through a narrow metal container. Keep moving straight until you notice an opening to the left. Enter here and drop down to the open floor below.
Once down here, you’ll come across another opening that you can crouch through. As you do, you’ll be confronted by your contact, Bree, who will hold you at gunpoint.
Talk to Bree
A timed dialogue prompt will appear quickly, prompting you to ask her to relax. Following this, she will request to see the access card as proof of your identity, after which she will ease her guard. Subsequently, follow Bree as she guides you into an old facility underground.
Information will be limited at this point, so it’s advisable to go along with her, despite her cautious demeanor. Once inside, you’ll need to scan the area for potential threats and proceed cautiously alongside Bree. At a certain juncture, Bree will remark on how things have been proceeding smoothly thus far but will advise you to stay alert, just in case.
Deactive the defense systems
In the subsequent section of the Cyberpunk 2077 “Shot by Both Sides” quest, you’ll find yourself navigating through an active security system, necessitating your engagement with automated turrets. Additionally, there will be Laser proximity mines in this area, so it’s imperative to disable all security measures to progress.
It’s worth noting that you can swiftly hack and deactivate cameras to evade detection and prevent an immediate trigger of the security system. This approach also facilitates an easier deactivation of the turrets.
Moving forward, the next chamber will be brimming with even more security measures. It’s advisable to deactivate as many of them as possible promptly to streamline your progress.
Furthermore, be aware that there’s a main computer located behind the door to the left, near the camera. This computer can be used to disable the security system. If you prefer to disable them manually, you can certainly choose that route, but it’s a convenient option to keep in mind.
After successfully eliminating the threats in the area, proceed to the next room where you’ll find a deactivated turret, and simply follow Bree as she enters the mainframe room.
Within this room, Bree will request that you view three distinct video recordings from the past. These recordings culminate in the shocking revelation that Militech had employed a rogue AI in an attempt to enhance their outdated weaponry.
With this revelation in mind, you prepare to leave. However, to your surprise, the individual who posed as the ‘neighbor’ at the beginning of the quest, a Special Militech Agent named Dante Caruso, appears with a gun in hand. He proceeds to disclose some of Bree’s history as a former Militech employee, a claim she acknowledges.
At this juncture, Dante will attempt to coerce you, asserting that Bree intends to sell the data and abscond with the money as part of a deal. He insists that to eliminate any witnesses who caught even a glimpse of the project, including you, is necessary to tie up loose ends.
Should you kill Dante or Bree in Shot by Both Sides?
You will have a limited time choice between siding with Bree in Shot by Both Sides or letting the timer go down and letting Dante kill Bree. In my opinion, it is better to side with Bree as not only will you successfully complete the task given to you by Mr. Hands but also gain extra rewards.
If you opt to support Bree, you’ll need to eliminate Dante, which shouldn’t pose a significant challenge. Taking down Dante allows you to collect a few items, including voice notes detailing his activities leading up to this point and some personal thoughts. Nearby, you’ll also find his weapon, Ol’ Reliable, a tier 5 Iconic Power Revolver. Return to where Bree is hiding, converse with her, and she’ll discuss her plans to publish the article and leave Night City for an extended period. She’ll set down her pistol and return to the terminal. You can pick up this weapon, a tier 5 Iconic Power Pistol named Riskit.
Once you’ve completed these actions, depart from the facility, and you should receive a message from Mr. Hands, congratulating you on a job well done.
If you choose to side with Dante, he will shoot Bree, concluding the matter. You can loot her body to obtain the Riskit Power Pistol. Dante will remark on how her publication of the data would have triggered a modern witch hunt and how she betrayed the previous individual in charge of the operation, leading to their demise.
Dante will then give you a shard containing Bree’s conversation with Adam Naoki, validating his claims of her betrayal. He will express gratitude and compensate you for your assistance, while also advising you to believe in people but never to fully trust them.
Subsequently, as you exit the facility, Mr. Hands will contact you, expressing disappointment at your failure to save Bree, thus marking the conclusion of the “Shot by Both Sides” quest in Cyberpunk 2077.
