Preview of Little Nightmares III – Let’s be afraid together

We share our impressions of the demo presentation of the upcoming horror platformer Little Nightmares III.

  • Developer: Supermassive Games
  • Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment
  • Release date: 2024

In the demo, we were shown the first location of the game – the city of Necropolis, where the main characters, Low and Odin, find themselves after they find themselves in a distorted world through a mirror.

The necropolis is a giant medieval-style ruin that preserves only memories of the formerly living city that stood in its place. Now there are only crows, figures of people frozen in horror… and a giant doll, which clearly considers this place its playground and will not miss the opportunity to play with the newly arrived guests.

Throughout the presentation, Lowe and One tried to get through the ruins and, if possible, avoid being caught by the monster. To do this, the heroes use their unique skills: the boy wields a bow and arrow, with which he can, for example, break ropes, push objects located on a hill, and fight enemies – for example, in the demo, they showed an intense battle with large flying beetles, as well as a shot at a crow that was holding the key the characters needed in its beak.

The girl, in turn, does not part with the wrench. It allows her to break down obstacles, activate mechanisms, and, when necessary, use it to protect herself from opponents: in the aforementioned battle with beetles, Low’s arrows only stunned the insects, while Odin had to finish them off on the ground.

Obviously, the journey of two characters together involves their cooperation, and here Little Nightmares III will offer co-op for the first time in the series. The game is being developed not by Tarsier Studios, responsible for the previous installments, but by Supermassive Games, the studio known for Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures Anthology series, and The Quarry, and these guys know a lot about creating an immersive co-op experience.

The demo showed some team interactions, mostly simple ones like moving heavy boxes together or opening massive gates. It is noteworthy that the authors added the ability to call a partner: if he hesitates somewhere, the player can attract his attention by shouting. Considering that the threequel will only receive online co-op (without support for play on one screen), this could be a useful option, especially if you play with a stranger. Presumably, the title will have a “friend pass”: to play together, you will only need one copy of the game, while the second participant will be able to download the client for free.

Speaking about the threequel, one cannot fail to note how much better it has become. Previous installments in the Little Nightmares series have been eye-catching with their art design, and the new installment doesn’t look like it will lower the bar, showcasing detailed environments and scary imagery. I would like to hope that the new developers have enough imagination to make the game even more creepy.

Little Nightmares III will be released in 2024 on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
